Lokales Wissen
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
ALTERNATIVES The landscape in East Kassel becomes a living archive of the engagement with various alternative lifestyles over the last few decades. Whether urban agriculture or SOLAWI, the harvest-your-own fields or MILA, community gardens or the allotment concept, edible cities or breweries: due to the protection of the Fulda’s undevelopable floodplain, an illustrious culture of practice has developed here, with which this loose community of diverse participants collectively seek new ways of engaging with the landscape in their own lives.
The people here make exemplary use of this idyllic location in the immediate vicinity of the city center to run through a whole compendium of alternative lifestyles.
TRANSFORMATION INSTEAD OF PRODUCTION In doing so, they transform specific situations rather than producing new ones. The MILA members’ store, for example, was born out of necessity when the last grocery store in the neigh- borhood closed down. From this difficult situation, the residents developed a self-organized organic food store, which is more of an informal community center with shopping and exhibition facilities, a place where the urban village community can now meet, exchange ideas, and reconstitute itself again and again. The Blüchergarten was conceived as a community garden without fixed boundaries at an early stage by the founders, the Balcke family, and to this day it remains a highly enjoyable and relaxing space for the people of Unter- neustadt with community building and a garden circus. And SOLAWI Gärtnerei Fuldaaue transformed the site of a former nursery into a laboratory for urban agriculture with self-determined directives for action.
A COMMUNITY CIRCULAR ECONOMY NETWORK The location on the banks of the Fulda is an extremely pleasant laboratory for the residents too, who are all very well connected. For example, many of them work with SOLAWI in order to later supply their own vegetables to MILA—this is entirely in the spirit of local production and distribution, which incorporates social togetherness into the circular economy. As an open garden landscape that is actively used by parents and their children, the Blüchergarten is also deeply integrated into this informal community of solidarity, just like the artist Rene Wagner, who is active in many of these initiatives and has his studio in the Ahoi, 1 the former boathouse on the Fulda. And the Selbsterntefeld (harvest-your-own field) like Essbare Stadt (eatable city) is already inscribing a shared practice into urban development as a planning opportunity.
BOUNDARIES The self-consciousness of this landscape only gradually dissolves once you reach the boundaries of this scenic idyll. The KGV Schwanenwiese continues to be subject to the self-imposed rules of the functional garden, while Meister Florian Andreas Vollmann has followed in his father’s footsteps and represents the classic transmission of knowledge from father to son. At the Schwanenwiese fairground, you encounter the emptiness of an absent festive event, representing those whose locality is dispersed throughout the world but is correspondingly strongly offset by family relationships.
PARALLEL WORLDS AND FESTIVALIZATION While documenta fifteen represents the problematic aspect of festivalization as a major art event, questions also arise about what this means in the local context. The fact that according to local street worker even sex work increases exponentially in the context of this sophisticated cultural exhibition in Kassel, and that women are even traveling there to meet the massively growing demand, is a much-told story in the surroundings of East Kassel, where residential sex work is flourishing, although it is difficult to verify. For in addition to the legal sex profession, much continues to take place in the blurred milieu between this trade, human trafficking, and drug-related crime.
CARMILE AlWali, the Syrian snack bar directly opposite the vehicle registration center, is a particularly good example of patient yet unbending adaptation to circumstances. For its chef and owner Mazen, who offers his small yet culinary best here in the no-man’s-land of the major arterial road, has already left the Syrian war behind him, in which he lost everything, in order to start a new life in Kassel. And Mike Euler—an artist, musician and highly gifted allrounder, who has transformed his studio between the import and export dealers into a Gesamtkunstwerk—continues to struggle with the circumstances of a landscape that, here at the end of our route, is looking toward a new and uncertain future, which in turn will be determined more by urban planners than by the delicate and profound local knowledge of its inhabitants.
URBAN PLANNING In order to change this, the project is being supervised by Renée Tribble, an architect and professor of urban planning at the TU Dortmund University. Together with her students, she attempts to create new ways of accessing local knowledge and enabling it to be used and effective in urban development. As a MAP project, Eine Landschaft continues to try to establish this important link between everyday culture and art, urban planning and local knowledge, and to make this impactful in new planning processes. The specific knowledge of local protagonists and contexts will be indispensable in solving the important questions of the future.
A ROUTE THROUGH URBAN SPACE With this in mind, we warmly invite you to join us on a journey along an inconspicuous blue trail into nearby yet unknown and unexpected terrain, in order to discover—parallel to the international discourse of documenta fifteen—the local knowledge of a landscape that has virtually invented itself here in the east of Kassel. In a joint program with ZK/U from Berlin, which also lands at the Fulda with its „Citizenship“, we also offer tours along the course with guests and various other events.
